What Are Hemp Gummies?
Hemp gummies do not contain CBD or THC as they come from hemp seed oil. This oil is extracted from hemp, a plant similar to the cannabis plant but contains little to no THC. While many CBD products can be sourced from the hemp plant, hemp seeds do not contain any CBD. Much of the difference between the two lies in the extraction method and source of extraction.
For example, the hemp plant has many therapeutic benefits to offer and has a rich profile of phytocannabinoids such as CBN, CBG, CBD-A, and THC among hundreds of others. At BATCH, we exclusively extract hemp flower using ultra-cold, food-grade ethanol.
Below we’ve broken down the differences between hemp and marijuana for you.

In all, you can see hemp gummies as coming from hemp seed oil. However, they do not contain the same benefits as CBD as they are extracted from different parts of the hemp plant. Some even believe that hemp gummies contain beneficial fatty acids and vitamins, but there is most likely more research needed.
What Are CBD Gummies?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis plants. A cannabis plant contains more THC than CBD, making it a more traditional psychoactive choice for some users. However, those who do not like the effects of THC may also find CBD from hemp plants. The hemp plant contains more CBD than THC, making it a “lighter” option for those who do not want to feel high.
As mentioned above, hemp gummies are sourced from hemp seed oil while CBD gummies are sourced from the leaves and flowers of the hemp plant.
Hemp Gummies vs. CBD Gummies
If you’re looking to choose between the two, we have the answers for you. Below we’ve detailed the health benefits, side effects, and what’s a better choice for you.
CBD Vs Hemp Health Benefits
According to WebMD, hemp seeds are rich in healthy fats like:
- Omega-3
- Omega-6 Fatty Acids
- Vitamin E - Which helps with immune system support
Research has also suggested that hemp may provide health benefits for reducing the risk of heart disease and improved digestion among others.
However, the benefits are more nutritional based than that of CBD which is still being further researched. Some research suggests that CBD may be beneficial for:
- Treating Cancer - In 2016 researchers found that cannabinoids may be promising in fighting against cancer. This is due to the compounds found in cannabinoids working to inhibit the growth of certain types of tumor cells.
- Chronic Pain - A 2018 study found that 15 of 18 trials demonstrated a significant analgesic effect of cannabinoids when compared to a placebo. A portion of patients also self-reported a 30% reduction in pain intensity (based on a scale of 0-10).
- Epilepsy - As of 2021, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers conducted an observational study to better understand the impact of CBD on those with epilepsy. Their findings revealed a possible reduction in the adverse effects associated with anti-seizure medications.
- Anxiety - Researchers similarly found CBD oil to be effective for pediatric anxiety and insomnia as part of PTSD. The trial of CBD oil use resulted in a decrease in anxiety and improvement in sleep. With limited pediatric research on CBD oil use, this is a step forward to better treat and manage children’s mental health.
Today there are so many options for CBD oil that there is something for everyone. There are options for those who have trouble sleeping, those who are stressing out, and even for those times when your thoughts are racing.
Possible Side Effects
Dr. Peter Grinspoon with Harvard Health Publishing, mentions side effects of nausea, fatigue, and irritability. He also mentions the potential interaction of CBD with blood thinning medications, which may result in abnormalities in liver blood tests.
This is not meant to scare or dissuade a person from using CBD, it is merely meant to inform. However, it is always beneficial to discuss any new addition to your body with your doctor before consumption. Your doctor can best explain and direct you based on your individual medical history.
You will also want to discuss the potential use of a hemp product before simply beginning.
Which Is Better?
That depends on your preference! CBD gummies provide the benefits of a cannabinoid like CBD, without the psychoactive effects found in THC products. On the other hand, a hemp gummy may be a better alternative if you’re looking for the benefits of using a product with hemp seed oil.
All this means is that the oil is sourced from different parts of the hemp plant. CBD extraction offers some of the potential benefits listed above, while hemp extraction has a richer profile of essential nutrients, vitamins, and acids. Interestingly, hemp seed oil is also used in manufacturing clothing and fibers as well.
Are Hemp and CBD Gummies Safe?
Yes! Both hemp and CBD gummies are considered safe to consume. However, you should always consult your doctor before beginning anything new. This way, you can be sure that you are not taking something new without considering any underlying medical issues or medications.
Are CBD And Hemp Gummies Legal?
Yes! The 2018 Farm Bill redefined the use of hemp to allow for legal use. Any hemp-derived product under 0.3% THC is legal to possess, sell, and consume. However, any product over 0.3% THC is still considered to be marijuana and is federally illegal. It’s important to check your state guidelines to better understand how your state classifies CBD products in relation to the legal percentage of products containing THC.
Can CBD Or Hemp Gummies Make You ‘High’?
No! Most CBD and hemp products are already low (if not completely free of THC) in THC, but legally they must contain less than 0.3% THC thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill.
Should I See A Doctor Before Consuming Them?
Yes. Despite not feeling “high” from CBD or hemp gummies, you should still consult with your doctor before taking a new product. Your doctor will be able to see your medical history and prescriptions before telling you if/if not to begin consuming CBD or hemp gummies. In this case, it’s better to do your research and discuss any questions with your doctor for personalized advice.
